An Old Friend (Parramos)

We got a late start this morning. I told the boys that they could relax till about 11 in the morning. At about that time we headed to a local bus station. The station is about a 20 minute walk from our place. To get to it, you have to walk through a very lively market that has everything you could possibly imagine and everything is negotiable. I told the boys that the bus station we were going to was not going to be like anything they had seen before. When we arrived, it did not disappoint. We are used … Continue reading An Old Friend (Parramos)

A quick tour (Chichen itza)

(Little to no editing…)We awoke around 5:00 in the morning. Actually, I woke up first and got everyone going. They all seemed in good spirits, but you can tell that they were hurting. At least that is the way it looked from my perspective. We skipped breakfast that morning because we had to take a walk to a hotel called Terra Caribe. Jonny said that there would be a shuttle to pick us up from the front of the building. We did not have to wait too long. I always get nervous whenever someone says “Meet us at Tierra Caribe … Continue reading A quick tour (Chichen itza)

They wanted adventure…they got it right away

We were out of bed and out the door by about 3:40 in the morning. Our bags were packed, and we were ready to go. We arrived at the airport at PDX just after 4 in the morning. The plan was to take a short flight from PDX and land in LAX where we would have a layover for about three hours. We checked out bags with Alaska Airlines. Caleb and I had to check our backpacks, so we wrapped them in black sacks and the teller took them. He handed us our boarding pass but then told us that … Continue reading They wanted adventure…they got it right away

I don’t remember writing this so I will just post it anyway

We left at the beginning of may. I don’t remember the exact date but I had just finish teaching a class at Concordia University. We had planned for this day for about six months. Every day I searched for cheap tickets but I could not find any thing less than 500 dollars per person. One day we were at the Milagro Theater to see a friend who was preforming a young rebel who lived in the 80´s. The truth is I did not like the play because there was way too much profanity, but I really enjoyed the opportunity to see … Continue reading I don’t remember writing this so I will just post it anyway

From Memory

Alisa and I had a great trip this past summer. We got the chance to travel through Mexico for 35 days, and it was a great experience. The last time I visited Mexico was in 1996 when I was only 17 years old. This time, being a little older and I hope wiser, the trip was completely different.  We started in Mexico City where we spent about 10 days exploring, visiting museums, eating in cafes, visiting ruins, and even visiting a Cat Cafe. Alisa y yo tuvimos un buen viaje este verano. Tuvimos la oportunidad de viajar por México por … Continue reading From Memory

Home

We woke up this morning around 3:30am. There were two reasons why it was really hard to get out of bed. The first, both of us couldn’t sleep the evening before and, second, when we finally did fall a sleep, someone kept ringing on the door bell over and over around midnight. After getting all our things ready, the owner of the hostel was already up and asked if we were ready to head out. She said that it was going to cost Q40 to give us a ride to the Airport. I opened the email and checked my receipt. … Continue reading Home

Almost Over

Well, today was our last full day here in Guatemala. Unfortunately, our last night at Hugo’s house was not a restful as we hoped it would be. Someone started setting off fireworks right down the street. I got out of bed thinking it was already morning only to discover that it was only 3am. We were up and packing around 7:30. Estella, Hugo’s wife, was feeling really ill and as a result, she couldn’t get out of bed to say goodbye to us. However, we were able to say goodbye to Hugo and his niece Melanie. It was really sad … Continue reading Almost Over
